| Abstract | ||
| Background:Salivary immunoglobulin A considers a natural defense mechanism in saliva. It has an important role in preventing bacterial adherence and penetration into the oral mucosal epithelium. It could help preserving the integrity of the oral surfaces. Aim of study:The aim of the study was to assess the correlation between concentration of SIgA and health of periodontal tissues. Subject and methods:Thirty subjects were included in the study. Ten subject as healthy control, ten patients with gingivitis, and ten patients with chronic periodontitis. Full-mouth clinical periodontal parameters were recorded at base line in all groups and after treatment in both study groups. Saliva samples were collected at base line and six weeks after therapy. SIgA level was measured using immunoturbidmetric method and data were statistically analyzed. Result:The result of the present study showed a significant improvement in all clinical parameter (GI, PI, PBI, PPD and CAL) after phase I therapy in gingivitis and chronic periodontitis groups. At the baseline, the salivary IgA levels were significantly higher in gingivitis and chronic periodontitis patient than healthy subjects were. After phase I therapy, there were a significant decrease in SIgA concentrations in gingivitis and chronic periodontitis patients versus there concentrations at the base line. Conclusion andRecommendations:Scaling and root planning is the mainstay of treatment of periodontal diseases, as it improved clinical parameter in-patient with gingivitis and chronic periodontitis.
