| Abstract | ||
| Sociolinguistics concerns with studying the use of language in different social contexts. Address terms in sociolinguistics is defined as the linguistic form used to refer to people Yule (2006), and they considered as conveyors of social information (Parkinson, 1985). This study aims at describing the usage of Egyptian Arabic forms of address based on gender across two domains; Family Domain (kinship terms), and Street / Strangers Domain. Two online questionnaires were designed, one to elicit female address terms and the other devoted for male terms of address, with the participation of 334 subjects (151 males and 183 females). Results show that Egyptians use different terms to address each other’s such as Kinship terms, nominal terms, Teknonyms, and Occupational terms. Gender and age as asocial variables direct and guide the speakers on how to use address terms From studying and describing the address terms of Egyptian Arabic, many of the characteristics of the Egyptian society and culture can be detected. | ||
