| Abstract | ||
| Of the six main coastal urban centers of the Red Sea Governorate of Egypt, Shalatin is the least studied in terms of flood hazards. As an attempt to fill this gap in research, the present study aims to explore to what extent is Shalatin city vulnerable to flood hazard. This was best accomplished by urban flood modeling. Using remote sensing products and the data collected in field study, all the layers required for modeling were produced in ArcGIS software at the highest possible resolution. The latest version (6.0) of HEC-RAS software was used to model three hypothetical cases of flood events as one-dimensional unsteady flow. Three types of maps was constructed to assess quantitatively the extent of flooding and water depth, water velocity, and the flood hazard. The results show that Shalatin seems to be less vulnerable to flooding compared with other cities of the Egyptian Red Sea coast. The construction of two earthen dykes, each about 2000 m long, is recommended to save the most vulnerable areas. The present study is the first to tackle the simulation of urban flood for an Egyptian city at resolution up to the single building. | ||
