| Abstract | ||
| Introduction: Biebersteinia multifida (Geraniacea) grows in many parts of the world. It is known by the local name Cheleh-Dagh in Iran. In traditional medicine, it is used to treat muscle disorders and strengthen physical strength also to cure rheumatic diseases and to relieve pain and bone fractures. This study was undertaken to determine probable teratogenicity of methanolic extract of the root part of Biebersteinia multifida DC in mouse embryo. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 50 female BALB/c mice were randomly divided into five groups: the control, phenytoin, and three experimental groups that received Biebersteina multifida DC root extract with the doses of 120, 150, and 180 mg/kg. All groups received extract at days 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 of pregnancy intraperitoneally. Finally, at day 18 of pregnancy, all embryos were removed by caesarian section and analyzed from the aspect of viable, dead, or reabsorption status. Furthermore, weight and Crown-rump length (CRL) of fetuses were analyzed by caliper and digital balance. Using the alizarin red and alcian blue double staining technique, macroscopic abnormalities of the skeleton were investigated. Data were analyzed using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and chi-square test. Results: Fetuses of the treatment groups received methanolic extract of Biebersteinia multifida DC, showed significant decrease in Crown-rump length (CRL) and weight. Different skeletal anomalies appeared in the fetuses including polydactyly, extra rib, conjoined ribs, and scoliosis. Conclusion: This study has documented that intraperitoneal usage of the Biebersteina multifida DC root extract during pregnancy reduces growth and weight and also leads to different skeletal abnormalities in mouse fetuses. Therefore, it seems that this medicinal plant could be teratogenic during pregnancy. | ||
