| Abstract | ||
| Metal concentrations were assessed in seafood species from the north-western Atlantic waters using microwave digestion and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The levels of Fe, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, As, Mn, and Ni were, in general, lower than the international safety standards for seafood quality. The health risk assessment of metal ingestion through seafood consumption was estimated using the target hazard quotient (THQ) and the estimated daily intake (EDI). While, the metal pollution index (MPI) was used as a quantitative indicator of the contamination level of marine organisms. The obtained results showed that the THQ and EDI were lower than the unity (<1) and the oral reference doses (RfD), respectively. Hence, the consumer is not likely to experience health effects through the ingestion of seafood. The metal pollution index values were relatively higher for cephalopods, compared in decreasing order to mussels, crustaceans, and fish, respectively. | ||
