| Abstract | ||
| Background: The blood transfusion process is a complex and high-risk procedure. the nurse is the first person who responsible for initiating, maintaining, monitoring, and discontinuing the blood transfusion, as well as protecting the patient from the potential transfusion reactions Objective: To assess the safety nursing practices provided to patients undergoing blood transfusion procedure. Settings: The study was carried out at inpatient medical and surgical units of two hospitals: Damanhour National Medical Institute -affiliated to the General Organization for teaching hospitals and Institutes and. Damanhour Oncology Center - affiliated to the Ministry of Health, Egypt. Subjects: a convenient sample of ninety nurse's male and female involved in providing direct care for blood transfusion patients at the above-mentioned settings. These constitute fifty inpatient nurses from Damanhour National Medical Institute and forty inpatient nurses from Damanhour Oncology. Tools: two tools were used for data collection. The first tool was Socio Demographic and Academic Profile Questionnaire Sheet to elicit the data about nurse's socio demographic and academic characteristics second tool was Safety Nursing Practices Provided to Patients undergoing Blood Transfusion procedure: observational checklist to observe the extent of safety in nursing practices provided to patients undergoing blood transfusion procedure. Results: Findings of the present study revealed that the highest portion of studied nurses (90.0%) had unsatisfactory nursing practices in relation to assessment of safety practices Provided to Patients undergoing Blood Transfusion procedure with mean ± SD equal 7.98 ± 4.99.There are a positive statistical significant relationship between the safe nurses practices and their level of education, years of experience and attendance of training programs were represent(χ2= 19.301* MCp= <0.001* , χ2= 50.00* FEp= <0.001* ) respectively. while no statistically significant difference was detected between safe nurses’ practices and their gender, age, years of experience and frequency of performing blood transfusion Conclusion: The study concluded that this study illustrated that majority of nurses had unsatisfactory level of overall practice regarding safe blood administration. Moreover, this study concluded that the majority of nurses had unsatisfactory practices regarding health care environmental safety, safe blood transfusion procedure. | ||
