| Abstract | ||
| A trial was performed to investigate the effect of bioflocs on performance, of Clarais gariepinus juveniles (Mean initial 8.21±0.3g) in zero water exchange system. Four treatments (Bioflocs) with one control were evaluated. The treatments (Bioflocs) comprise of different carbon sources (Cassava peel, Tapioca, Wheat offal and Brewery waste) and clear water referred to as control. Each group were replicated in various tanks (500L) and each tank contained 1000 fish. Inoculum was formed in glass tanks (5L) by adding 20g of pond bottom soil in well aerated water (1L) containing 10mg L-1 ammonium sulphate (NH)4SO4 and 400mg L-1 of different carbon sources. The suspension was incubated for 24 h for microbial growth prior to stocking. The carbon sources were added to the tanks at a ratio of 20:1 in all the treatments to promote the development of bioflocs. At the end of the experiment there was no significant difference (p < 0.05) in the growth parameters that was obtained. Haematological examinations revealed that (Hb, Ht, RBC) were significantly different (p < 0.05) with Tapioca based bioflocs being the lowest but no significant difference was observed in WBC in all the treatments. The oxidative status (Gpx, SOD, CAT) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the control in all the Bioflocs based treatment. The fishes were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophilli post rearing and the relative survival was recorded over 14days post challenge. The result showed that bioflocs system using these various carbon sources improves immunity, growth performance and feed utilization in Clarias gariepinus juvenile. | ||
