| ABSTRACT Background: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is androgen-dependent alopecia resulting from the conversion of terminal hair into vellus hair. Zinc is one of the most studied trace elements in hair disorders and Iron is one of the trace elements used in the treatment of AGA. Aim of the Work: To evaluate the serum levels of zinc and iron in male and female patients with AGA and to compare the findings with normal controls. Patients and Methods: The study was conducted on 60 AGA patients (30 males and 30 females) and 40 healthy volunteers (20 males and 20 females). We measured serum zinc and iron for all participants. Results: Serum zinc (µg/dL) and iron (µg/dL) levels were statistically significantly lower in female AGA (FAGA) patients compared to controls. There were non-significant differences in serum levels of zinc and iron seen in the male AGA (MAGA) group compared to controls. Conclusions: Serum levels of zinc and iron were lower in FAGA patients than in normal controls and adding zinc and iron to female patients with AGA is recommended. | ||
