Abstract
Background: Lower Respiratory tract infection is the main cause of utilizing health services by
children. Complementary therapies as buteyko and diaphragmatic breathing technique are used to
improve clinical outcomes. The current study was aimed to evaluate the effect of buteyko breathing
technique versus diaphragmatic breathing on clinical outcomes for children with lower respiratory
tract infection. Research hypotheses:1-Children who are applying diaphragmatic breathing technique
are expected to improve their breathing than control group. 2- Children who are applying buteyko
breathing technique are expected to improve their breathing than control group. 3-Children clinical
outcomes are expected to be improved lower respiratory tract infection as heart and respiratory rate,
oxygen saturation. Subjects and Method: A convenience sampling of ninety children with lower
respiratory tract infection participated in the study. The study was conducted at pediatric medical
departments of Tanta Main University Hospital . Five Tools were used to collect data: Structured
Interview Schedule, Control Pause Breathing Test, Physiological Measurement and Oxygen
Saturation , Peak Expiratory Flow Rate, Children Clinical Outcomes. The results : Statistical
significant differences were found regarding decreasing respiratory rate, increasing oxygen
saturations after application of buteyko and diaphragmatic breathing technique. Conclusion: Both
buteyko and diaphragmatic breathing had a positive effect on improve clinical outcomes as
decreasing respiratory rate, increasing oxygen but buteyko breathing technique was more effective in
improve clinical outcomes as on decreasing heart rate and improving peak expiratory flow rate than
diaphragmatic technique for children with lower respiratory tract infections. Recommendation:
Implementation of buteyko and diaphragmatic breathing technique should to be endorsed as a part of
the routine care for children with lower respiratory tract infection to improve their clinical outcomes
