| Abstract | ||
| Background: To put it simply, vitamin D is a prohormone. A healthy plasma vitamin D level is indicative of ‘good’ health. Vit D is necessary for calcium metabolism and bone mineralization due to its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, and regulation of keratinocyte differentiation and proliferation. It also affects the hair cycle, and its role in hair loss is under constant research. Aim and objectives: to evaluate serum and hair levels of vitamin D according to Gender. Subjects and methods: In this cross-sectional research; Circulating 25(OH)D levels were recorded in 80 cases from Dermatology Outpatient Clinic of Minia University Hospital using ELISA kits. Results: In males; serum vitamin D levels was 17-31 ng/ml, with a mean ±SD 24.2 ± 3.4. In females; Serum vitamin D levels range between 17-30 ng/ml, with a mean ±SD 23.2 ± 2.8. In males, the hair vitamin D level was 0.1-1.86 ng/ml, with a mean ±SD 0.8 ± 0.4. In females; hair vitamin D levels range between 0.05-1.98 ng/ml, with a mean ±SD 0.8 ± 0.4. There was non-statistical difference between participants regarding hair and serum level vit D. Conclusion: No significant variations in serum and hair vit D among males and females. | ||
