| Abstract | ||
| Introduction: Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist. Because of warnings by the US Food and Drug Administration to avoid using montelukast, the effect of early postnatal exposure to montelukast on several factors affecting rats was investigated. This study aims to conduct a review of articles on the use of Montelukast on the experimental level. Due of the significant adverse effects of montelukast and the high prevalence of asthma in children, there is a warning by FDA regarding the use of this drug to stop this agent immediately if side effects occur. Methods: This study aims to evaluate the developmental parameters, behavioural outcomes and brain histology in rats after exposure to different doses of montelukast , and they were divided into 3 groups. (Each included 12 pups from the following Group 1(control group) and they were divided randomly into 3 groups, each included 12 pups at 10mg/kg/day, at 20mg/kg/day while a significant difference was observed in the open field test in the montelukast group compared to the control. Results: The current study show significant differences in body weight, eye-opening test, nest search test and tail length between the study groups. While a significant difference was observed in the open field test in the montelukast group compared to the control group test, as well as when examining under the microscope the anterior cortical parts of cerebral cortex, cerebellum and hippocampus and recognize number of layers of each part with presence of histological changes in layers of tissues in group 2and3 compared with control group. Conclusion: Consequently, montelukast affects tissues in the frontal cortex, cerebellum, and hippocampus in rats exposed to these agents during the early postnatal period. | ||
