| Background: Nociceptive pain in osteoarthritis (OA) is correlated significantly with focal joint changes. Yet, another substantial pathway is associated with the severity of pain in OA which is a neuropathic pathway. Aim: This study aimed todetermine the frequency of neuropathic pain in Egyptian patients with knee OA. Subjects and Methods: One hundred ten patients with unilateral OA knees were included. The frequencies of neuropathic pain were assessed by the Douleur Neuropathique 4 (DN4), the Self-Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (S-LANSS), and the Pain-DETECT scores. The severity of OA was evaluated by Kellgren-Lawrence grades, Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain. Results:The mean age of the patients was 50.9±9.4 years with female predominance (60.2%). The frequencies of neuropathic pain were 17.3%, 11.8%, and 14.5% according to DN4, S-LANSS, and Pain-DETECT scores, respectively. Overall, 17 patients had manifestations of neuropathic pain (15.5%). Pain DETECT was significantly correlated with Kellgren-Lawrence grades, KOOS, and VAS for nociceptive pain, while S-LANSS was only correlated with KOOS. Conclusions:The patients with OA and neuropathic pain suffered from higher levels of nociceptive pain. When neuropathic pain is detected, suitable treatment options should be included in the management of OA. | ||
