| Abstract | ||
| Shigella is reported to be one of the most important causes of acute gastrointestinal infection in humans. Shigella is also one of the causes of acute watery diarrhea and bloody diarrhea in children and even adults in the world. Water and sewage are suitable sources for various phages that allow their isolation for therapeutic purposes. Currently, a serious medical and social problem is caused by the increase in antibiotic resistance of bacterial strains. In the studies conducted in Iran, it has been shown that Shigella is one of the important causes of bacillary dysentery and has increased antibiotic resistance in a wide range. At the same time, the pharmaceutical industry is reluctant to research and develop new antibiotics due to a lack of investment and the risks of developing resistance in bacteria, and attention has been directed to alternatives to the current and usual microbial control systems. Overall, it seems that phages can be a good alternative to antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial infections that do not respond to conventional antibiotics. Therefore, in this study, the isolation of Shigella from patients and finally the isolation of bacteriophage effective on Shigella in the surface water of Gorgan City were discussed. 45 patient samples were sampled and 7 Shigella isolates were identified. For bacteriophage isolation, 4 effective bacteriophages were isolated from 30 surface water samples after filtration. | ||
