| Abstract | ||
| Objectives: assessing role of ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of abnormal placenta position in women with placenta previa. Methods: In this prospective observational study, evaluation of fifty pregnant women less than 40 years old who presented with placenta previa and suspected accreta was conducted. All patients underwent abdomino_pelvic ultrasound examination and magnetic resonance imaging for placental assessment between 34-37 weeks of gestation prior to elective cesarean delivery. The results obtained from the US and MRI were compared with the intraoperative data. Results: The study found that out of the 50 cases, 26 were diagnosed with placenta previa accompanied by accreta, while 24 cases had placenta previa without abnormal placentation. Ultrasound suggested a diagnosis of placenta previa/accreta in 25 patients and placenta previa without accreta in 25 cases. Among these, 20 cases were true positive (80%) and five were false positive (20%), resulting in a sensitivity of 76.9% and specificity of 79.2%. MRI suggested a diagnosis of placenta previa/accreta in 33 out of 50 patients, and placenta previa without accreta in 17 cases. MRI demonstrated positive results in 25 out of 33 patients who were confirmed to have accreta. MRI showed true negative results in 16 patients (94.1%) and false negative in one case (5.9%), yielding a sensitivity of 96.2% and specificity of 66.7%. Conclusions: Magnetic resonance showed increased sensitivity, while ultrasound demonstrated increased specificity in diagnosing placenta previa and accreta.
