| Abstract | ||
| Background: Smoking is a spatial practice that takes place in a space that represents a common component of society, which makes smoking a phenomenon that has spatial, health, and moral dimensions with regard to harming non-smokers. Objectives: Studying the distribution of cafés and the spatial scale of discarded cigarette butts and their distribution; identifying public places in which these wastes are concentrated and monitoring them spatially through quantitative spatial analyses of the phenomenon of smoking; and mapping and modeling the spatial exposure of the population to the pollutants resulting from its practices. Methodology: The study relied on field work to identify the cafés and monitor smoking wastes through regular spatial monitoring around a sample of spaces. The study used geostatistical analysis and spatial modeling in a geographic information systems environment. Results: The study presented a complete map analysis to determine the spatial density of cafés and cigarette outlets, the estimated distribution of cigarette butt litter and smoking density, an analysis of hot spots for cigarette pollutants as an indicator warning passive smokers, and spatial modeling to estimate wastes and population exposure to smoking pollutants and wastes. Conclusion: This study is considered a spatial vision of the phenomenon of smoking and its wastes, and the authorities in charge of public health can take its results into account to contribute to reducing the dangers of smoking pollutants, preserving the aesthetic appearance and moral aspects of the city, and using them to justify separating smoking places away from non-smoking places. | ||
