| Abstract | ||
| background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system , it causes physical disability as well as cognitive dysfunction. the use of MRI in diagnosis and monitoring of multiple sclerosis made an important step towards appropriate use of MRI in routine clinical practice. MRS is considered as better indicator of metabolic dysfunction & disability more clearly than conventional MRI methods. Aim of the work To asses the role of magnetic resonance spectroscopy in multiple sclerosis patients. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on MRI unit Department of Radiology on 30 patients diagnosed with MS according to the 2017 McDonald diagnostic criteria and 20 healthy patients. A written informed consent was obtained from each patient prior to participating in the study. Results MRS studies on multiple sclerosis patients enabled in vivo assessment of metabolites reflecting tissue alteration , it also enabled to evaluate neurotransmitters probably involved in MS pathogenesis. MRS has revealed increased level of metabolites such as lipids, lactates, myoinositol & glutamic gluatamte As well as, there was different levels of Cho/ Cr & Cho/ NAA in multiple sclerosis patients according to activity of lesions. Conclusion MRI has revolutionized the diagnosis and surveillance of patients with MS. Not only can an MRI confirm the diagnosis, but follow-up scans can assess the response to treatment and help determine the disease pattern. Adding MR spectroscopy to conventional MRI increases the specificity and accuracy of MRI study in the diagnosis of MS | ||
