| Background: Bowel preparation is a significant barrier for patients undergoing colonoscopy, with inadequate preparations occurring in approximately 10–25% of cases. Insufficient nursing interventions can lead to poor bowel preparation and serious complications for patients. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of patient education interventions using different educational methods on the quality and complication of bowel preparation among patients undergoing colonoscopy at one of the university hospital in Egypt. Design: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized. Setting: The study was conducted in the colonoscopy units at Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Center in general surgery and internal medicine departments at El –Manial University Hospitals. Sample: A consecutive sample of 60 patients scheduled for colonoscopy was randomly divided into two equal groups of 30: the Study Group (I), which received pre-colonoscopy nursing education in addition to routine hospital care, and the Control Group (II), which received only routine care.tools:1. Patient assessment sheet, 2. Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS), 3.Assessment of post colonoscopy problems and complications. Results: The findings indicated highly significant differences between the study and control groups in terms of bowel clearance (P<0.001). Additionally, significant differences were found regarding the incidence of complications such as abdominal pain and distention. Conclusions: Pre-colonoscopy nursing education significantly enhances the quality of bowel clearance among subjects in the study group compared to those in the control group. Furthermore, this education positively impacts the reduction of complications among study group subjects. Recommendations: It is suggested to design pre-colonoscopy nursing education programs to assist patients in bowel preparation, thereby minimizing complications. Additionally, training programs for nurses should be implemented to enhance their skills in educating patients about colonoscopy preparation and the importance of seeking prompt medical advice. | ||
