| Abstract | ||
| Comedones, papules, pustules are the hallmarks of acne vulgaris(AV).The pathophysiology of AV involves oxidative stress.Lipid peroxides(LPO), in particular, are reactive oxygen species (ROS) that mediate acne inflammation. One of the metabolites of LPO that is frequently utilized as a biomarker of cell damage is malondialdehyde (MDA).Purpose of the study;This study was conducted to determine levels of MDA according to the severity of AV and The main objective of this study is to increase the knowledge regarding the involvement of oxidative stress and serve as the basis of antioxidant use as the adjuvant therapy in the treatment of AV in the future.Basic procedures:This cross-sectional analytic study included sixty AV patients. The samples were obtained from the blood plasma of the AV subjects, and a colorimetric kit supplied by Bio-diagnostic, Cairo, Egypt was used for the examination. The Shapiro Walk test was used to determine the normality of the data distribution, and the Chi square test and Fisher exact tests were used to determine the differences in plasma MDA levels based on the severity of AV. A value of less than 0.001 was considered significant.Main findings: Regarding the comparison of MDA between mild acne vulgaris cases, severe cases and control, the results were highly statistically significant (p value <0.01) as mean MDA was significantly lower among mild acne vulgaris ( 1.3±0.37 ) than severe cases (3.6±0.89), while MDA was significantly higher among mild and severe cases than among control.Principal conclusion:Variations in plasma MDA levels were observed according to the degree of AV. | ||
