| Abstract | ||
| Background: In Egypt, people with diabetes have four times the prevalence of Asymptomatic bacteriuria compared to the general population. It may cause pyelonephritis or the cystitis. Unfortunately, it may be difficult to distinguish pyelonephritis from cystitis clinically, especially in infants and young children. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of subtle Urinary Tract Infection in Type 1 diabetic children. Methodology: this analytic cross-sectional study was conducted in the Pediatrics Department, Aswan University Hospital on 212 pediatric patients with subtle UTI. All the studied groups have asymptomatic bacteriuria with positive urinalysis or urine cultures. Results: In T1DM, males represented 55% and females was 45%. Age was insignificantly decreased in the control group compared with T1DM groups. Additionally, HbA1c was significantly decreased in controls than T1DM groups. Also, pus cells, glucose, and ketones, casts and leucocytes were significantly increased in T1DM groups than healthy individuals. As well, urine culture was significantly different between the studied groups. Further, abnormal US findings were significantly increased in T1DM groups than group II. Conclusion: T1DM group had a higher prevalence of diabetic ketoacidosis at presentation compared to the controls, which had a higher proportion presenting with hyperglycemia. Also, T1DM group exhibited significantly higher levels of HbA1c, pus cells, glucose, ketones, casts, and leukocytes in urine, as well as increased abnormal ultrasonographic findings, compared to non-diabetics. However, urine culture results were insignificantly different between the groups, suggesting a potential discrepancy between the presence of asymptomatic bacteriuria and the development of overt UTI symptoms. | ||
