Potential Effects of Vitamin D and Resveratrol on Hematological and Renal Indicators Associated with Metabolic Syndrome in Rats | ||

| Abstract | ||
| Objective: To explore the effects of vitamin D or resveratrol administration on the hematological parameters, and renal function biomarkers in rats with induced metabolic syndrome. Design: Randomized- control experimental study. Animals: Forty- eight male albino rats. Procedures: rats were randomly divided into 6 equal groups. Control: received a chow diet, MetS: received a high fat fructose diet (HFFD), VD: received a chow diet and vitamin D, MetS+ VD: received HFFD+ vitamin D, RSV: received a chow diet and resveratrol, and MetS +RSV: received HFFD + resveratrol. Vitamin D was administrated intramuscularly (1000 IU/Kg; 3 days/week), whereas resveratrol was administered orally (30 mg/Kg BW/daily). After 10 weeks, hematological parameters such as red blood cell (RBCs) count, hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, packed cell volume (PCV), red blood cell indices, total leukocytic count (TLC) and differential leukocytic count (DLC) were measured. Furthermore, the degree of renal damage was assessed by measuring serum levels of urea, creatinine, uric acid. Results: MetS rats provoked insignificant changes on erythrogram results. However, they had significantly elevated TLC and neutrophilic count, and decreased total lymphocytic count. Furthermore, they had elevated urea, creatinine, and uric acids levels. However, vitamin D and resveratrol renovated these alterations with more ameliorating effect achieved upon vitamin D treatment. Conclusion and clinical relevance: Vitamin D and resveratrol have beneficial effects on hematological parameters and renal function in male rats with induced MetS, but vitamin D had the more improving effect. | ||
